Congratulations to Interior Surface again on their fourth nomination by Starnet, this time for their work on the Western Missouri Medical Center project in Warrensburg, Missouri. “The creative use of tile throughout . . . has unified [Western Missouri Medical Center’s] rambling collection of buildings into one modern, warm, and welcoming facility.” (Starnet) See for yourself:
Congratulations to Interior Surface for one of four 2013 Starnet Design Award submissions for 2013. The third submission is the Smithville High School Performing Arts Center, Smithville, Smithville, Missouri.
According to Starnet, “Sophisticated Style Meets Traditional High School” was the goal for Smithville’s New Performing Art Center. Centiva’s Contour Series Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) was selected to highlight the sophistication of the lobby and hallway areas of this building. Green, the school color was chosen as the main accent throughout this addition.
Designers also incorporated a wide variety of strong neutrals in order to emphasize a feeling of refined elegance. The main design challenge faced in this space was to add visual interest to the long hallways, which was achieved by adding curves to the LVT.
A main focal point on the lobby walls was created by adding a band of beautiful Marazzi Glass Tile to the exposed brick, unifying the old and new spaces of the building.
The auditorium features a non-traditional American Olean Tile as a defined wall below the fabric panels. This choice adds sophisticated ambiance to the space while providing a durable product requiring minimal maintenance. Luxurious high quality American Olean Tile was also used in the restrooms to provide ease of maintenance. The classic styling and elegant design concept has made this project a stunning success.

Interior Surface was recently the Installation Contractor for the Tremont Hen House Market supermarket design using Armstrong Natural Creations Mystix Vinyl Tile.
According to Armstrong Commercial Flooring, “Starnet selected the Tremont Hen House Market remodel as the 2012 ‘Retail’ category winner in their annual Design Awards, a contest that celebrates the creativity and talent of professionals in commercial flooring and interiors. Award winners are chosen based on their creative use of flooring, the integration of flooring into the overall design concept and the successful achievement of client objectives.”
Judge Gregory Bishop, president of Accolate Interiors, said the Hen House project “shined above the others for its stylish use of a predominately neutral palette. We were all impressed by the strategic use of shape and color in the flooring, and how it defined the space and contributed to the overall character of each department. We liked the way that the floors tied together with architectural elements, and how the neutral colors kept the focus on signage and splashes of color to help people navigate through the space.”
Fred Williamson, Vice President of Starnet, Operations, adds, “The NATURAL CREATIONS floors are a key design feature, along with the lighting. The flooring helps define areas like the pharmacy and the bank by using a range of color and texture to transition from one space to another. Also, the floor design picks up the curve and flow of the ceiling soffits, which also helps define areas within the store. There is an overall feeling of freshness, openness and comfort throughout the store, and the flooring helps create that atmosphere.”
Introducing BioBased Tile, a tile with enhanced environmental and performance attributes. BioBased Tile (BBT) contains BioStride polymer, which is made from rapidly renewable, U.S.-grown plant materials. The result is a tile that offers you greener flooring with performance features that are superior to ordinary VCT. And Armstrong is the company bringing it to you, a company that has “145 years of experience in flooring, and a proven track record of performance, quality and sound environmental practices, green operations and products aren’t new for us, but they continue to be the focus of our development efforts.” (Armstrong)
“Armstrong makes it easy to go green. A specifier no longer has to choose between a greener product and the project’s budget, which opens up enormous opportunities in virtually every market, including education, healthcare, retail, etc.,” said Paul Sharihari, principal, GreenMind.
With the benefits of this tile, there doesn’t seem to be a reason not to use it. BBT is (according to Armstrong):
- Enhanced Range of Green Benefits.
- An Affordable Greener Option.
- Enhanced Performance over Composition Tile with Classic Looks.
- No Additional Maintenance or Installation Requirements.
Michele Zelman, Public Relations Consultant for Armstrong Flooring Products,

Under the FloorScore program, hardsurface flooring products are tested and certified for compliance with California’s Section 01350 for low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emissions, the most stringent high-performance Indoor Air Quality requirement in the nation.
